CANLIS
“Simplicity and completion are the most important elements of my work. Anyone can make something simple seem complex; it is taking the complex and translating it into the simplest form that inspires me. I want the viewer to walk away settled, feeling the art has a sense of completion.”

Opportunity & Approach
I've known JP Canlis for just under 30 years. In 2004 JP asked if I would photograph some his incredible glass art. We decided to use only available light and do the entire initial shoot outdoors - which was different from the typical in-studio setups he had done before. JP later invited me to Seattle and other incredible venues to shoot more of his work.
Solution
We shot all of JP’s art using only available light. Most of the work for the initial set of images we shot outdoors. In all of our future setups we kept to the same approach with great success.

The images from our collaboration we picked and used in Seattle lifestyle and art publications and printed as large giclée prints in boutique hotels in the city.

/Solutions
01/ This was the first time glass art had been shot in this way and we were not sure how the final images would be accepted.
We took a risk and shot the initial images outdoors using only available light. We also opted to spend a lot of time shooting macro images of JP’s work. The final images were well received to our delight.
